In recent years there has been a tremendous increase in the focus on environmental issues. Some of this attention is legitimate but much has been no more than an attempt to ride this profitable green wave of public perception. At FPM, our location in the wooded hills of south central Ohio, has given our employees a natural respect for, and a desire to protect, the world that surrounds us. We have not changed the way we do business over the last two decades because we have always operated with a deep respect for the people who make our company successful and the environment in which we all live.
EPS and its impact on the environment The ironic truth about EPS is that the very thing which makes EPS one of the most cost effective and energy efficient building products is the thing that presents the biggest challenge to the environment. EPS is not affected by water, temperature fluctuations, or being buried underground. Because of this tremendous stability, it is a great building product but it does not easily break down in a land fill. Although there is no environmental contamination from EPS and no chemicals leach out into the soil or water, care should be taken to keep EPS out of our nations land fills.
Because of this, FPM sends all scrap material to a recycler. Our scrap material is compressed to 30 times its original density, so it takes up very little space, and it is sent to a re-processor who converts it into a variety of products for reuse. Many EPS manufacturers put scrap, or regrind, back into their blocks. FPM has chosen not to do this for the following reasons:
1. There is a limit to how many times material can be put back into the block. As it is reused over and over, it loses its ability to fuse into a structurally sound block. Eventually this material will find its way into a land fill.
2. Scrap, or grind will also cause cut pieces of foam to have very poor surface quality and less structural integrity. FPM has always produced 100% virgin material while assuring that none of our scrap ever has to wind up in a land fill. Quality and environmental responsibility are not mutually exclusive and have both been goals since out company began.
EPS and our nations energy use As our nation continues to experience rising costs for energy, the use of energy efficient building products like EPS will play an increasing role. There is no other product that can give the kind of return on energy investments like EPS. The cost per R-value of insulation is lower with EPS than just about anything else on the market. Other advantages, like its ability to be used in wet environments, make EPS rigid foam insulation a cost effective solution to the challenges of ever increasing heating and cooling costs.
In our rapidly changing world, the issues that face manufacturers, consumers, and governments all come down to the same thing, people. At FPM we manufacture a product, but that task is secondary to the fact that we are people who, like you, live in the environment in which we work. Our commitment to protecting that environment extends beyond our roles as employees. We will not sacrifice what is truly important. We, at FPM, commit to be the best stewards of what we have been given while we strive to create the best and most cost effective products for our customers.
